A curated cultural festival bringing together traditional performance practices of Indonesia and India, exploring their shared ritual foundations, performative vocabularies, and community-based modes of knowledge.
The programme
Performed by master artists, Kecak is one of Bali's most iconic performance traditions, rooted in ritual trance chants. A powerful chorus of men creates its signature “cak, cak, cak” rhythm, as dancers bring the stories to life through Balinese movement.
The vocal rhythm and choral structures of Balinese dance meet the percussive, movement-based vocabulary of Yakshagana, exploring shared stories.
Collaborative puppetry performances by master artists of Indonesia and India.
An introduction to Balinese and Indian shadow traditions, techniques of light, material, movement, and narration. Participants develop short sequences, and selected performers appear alongside master artists in a live presentation.
Exploring Balinese mask traditions with symbolism, facial geometry, colour, and expression. Hands-on creation of masks using traditional and accessible materials, exhibited as part of the festival display.
Traditional Balinese dance techniques, with a focus on body discipline, expression, and musicality.
An introduction to Balinese arts and culture by Dr. Wayan Dibia for university students and faculty, practitioners, researchers, scholars, and heritage enthusiasts across Bengaluru.

Padma Shri awardee & team
Dr. I Wayan Dibia is a renowned Balinese artist, scholar, and choreographer known for connecting Balinese and Indian performing traditions. With over 150 choreographic works and several books to his name, his work draws deeply from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. He was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2021 for his contributions to the arts and cross-cultural dialogue.
